Haitians buoyed by remarkable show of faith
Over the last two months, Haitians have shown a remarkable swelling of faith and determination as they try to survive and move forward from the Jan. 12 earthquake. Christian solidarity among Haitians has been central to their ability to cope with the disastrous surroundings. World Vision’s Laura Blank, who arrived the day after the quake, was amazed by the self-sacrificial attitude of the nonprofit’s Haitian staff. When they passed by destroyed buildings, they often called out the names of friends or relatives who had died there.

Friend of Texas church fires suspects alerted police
A close friend of one of the suspects in the East Texas church fires was responsible for tipping off police about the whereabouts and activities of Daniel McAllister and Jason Bourque. Both McAllister and Jason Bourque were staying with some of the tipster’s family when she started noticing strange behavior. The tipster said the two men were staying out all night and reeking of smoke when they came back.

Maryland may recognize gay marriages from other states
Maryland’s attorney general said Wednesday that the state may legally recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states.The 45-page opinion from Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler was addressed to state Sen. Richard S. Madaleno Jr. “You have asked whether those marriages may be recognized under state law. The answer to that question is clearly ‘yes,’” Gansler wrote.

In turning 100 years old, Des Moines’ Geneva Myles has plenty to look back on. Among her accomplishments is spending much of the past 50 years building a vibrant congregation with her husband, a pastor. The church community has reassured her, though, that “the occasion of love is shared to give honor to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for the wonderful things he has done in Sister Ryles’ life and continues to do in her life as a testimony and a witness for him,” current pastor Marlon Perkins said.

Nigeria uneasy after attacks on Christians
Tensions in Nigeria remain high in the aftermath of the killing of nearly 400 Christians by Muslim gangs armed with machetes. This latest conflict continues ongoing violence between Christians and Muslims in Africa’s most populous and most diverse country. The dead, in a freshly dug mass grave, included a pregnant woman and at least one infant. A few miles away in Jos, a city of a half-million at the crossroads of Nigeria’s Muslim north and predominantly Christian south, troops patrolled the outskirts and set up checkpoints.

Faith council submits recommendations to White House
The faith council advising the White House on policy prescriptions for a range of social issues submitted its final report Wednesday. Abortion reduction and religious hiring issues, two of the most contentious issues where faith and government intersect, was left off the table. The next council will be named in late spring/early summer, according to Faith Office Director Joshua Dubois. He said he doesn’t expect the next council to address the same issues this one did.
